Email advertising, 2026

"Email advertising" means two different things — and both are worth knowing. One: email as your own advertising channel, the highest-ROI, lowest-cost way to move existing demand. Two: buying ad space inside other people's emails — the sponsored-newsletter market, now worth billions and growing fast. This report benchmarks both, and flags where a headline number flatters the truth.

01 Executive summary

Email is the most cost-efficient advertising a marketer can run — but only for the job it's built for. As your channel, email returns about $36 per $1 and acquires action at a fraction of paid-media cost, because it works your existing, owned audience1. As an ad placement — a sponsorship inside someone else's newsletter — email has quietly become a $2.4B channel growing ~30% a year45.

The one-line takeaway Email is unbeatable advertising for converting demand you already have, and a fast-growing place to buy attention you don't. What it isn't is a like-for-like swap for paid search or social — those buy reach and new demand. Read the ROI gap (§03) with that distinction in hand.

02 Two meanings of "email advertising"

Same phrase, two very different budgets.

Before the numbers, a definition — because "email advertising" is used for two distinct activities, and their statistics don't mix.

SenseWhat it isWho pays whomCovered in
Email as your ad channelPromotional emails you send to your own opted-in listYou pay an ESP / design tool; the audience is owned§03–§05
Advertising inside emailBuying a sponsored slot in someone else's newsletterYou pay a publisher for access to their list§06–§07

The first is the dominant meaning and where most "email advertising ROI" stats come from. The second is a real, fast-growing ad market in its own right — and the two increasingly feed each other: brands buy newsletter placements to grow the owned lists they then advertise to.

03 Email vs. paid media: the ROI gap

Real and large — with a footnote you should read before quoting it.

On return per dollar, email tops every channel: about $36 per $1, and up to $42–45 in retail and ecommerce1. Paid channels are reported far lower — but here the numbers get slippery, so treat them as directional order-of-magnitude signals, not precise benchmarks.

ChannelReported ROI per $1Confidence
Email$36 (up to $42–45)Directional
SEO (organic search)~$22 (≈8×)Low-conf
Paid search / PPC~$2–8 (varies wildly)Low-conf
Social media ads~$2.80–$5Low-conf
Display ads~$1.35–$1.75Low-conf
Why the paid-channel figures are Low-conf Across reputable sources, paid-search ROI is quoted anywhere from $2 to $8 per $1 and display from $1.35 to well above that — the spread is too wide to treat any single figure as fact. Two structural reasons the gap with email is partly an illusion: email is cheap and sits at the bottom of the funnel (it harvests demand paid media created), and email is an owned asset while paid media is rented — it stops the moment you stop paying. Email converts demand more efficiently; it does not, by itself, create it.

04 The cost advantage: CPA & efficiency

The clearest, most defensible edge — email is simply cheaper to act on.

Where email advertising is unambiguously ahead is unit cost. Moving an owned subscriber to action costs a marketer on the order of $1–3 per acquisition, against roughly $30–80 to acquire a customer through paid social or search for many DTC brands6. Re-engaging an existing subscriber is routinely cited as an order of magnitude cheaper than buying a new customer with ads.

$30–80

Paid-ad CPA

Directional, not laboratory-precise Exact CPA figures swing hard by industry, list quality and product price, and most circulate without a clean primary. Read the ratio — email is roughly an order of magnitude cheaper per action — not the specific dollar amounts. The reason is structural: you already paid to acquire the subscriber, so each subsequent send is near-zero marginal cost.

05 Reach, opens & conversion

A smaller audience, engaged and converting far harder.

Email advertising reaches ~4.7 billion users worldwide3, and unlike a paid impression it lands in an inbox the recipient chose to open to you. Promotional email opens land in the ~20–40% range with click rates near 3–4% for broadcast sends2 — and it converts around 4.2%, versus ~0.6% for social ads6.

MetricEmail advertisingSocial ads (for contrast)
Global audience~4.7B email users~5.8B social identities
Engagement~20–40% open~0.45% IG engagement
Click rate (broadcast)~3–4%~0.5–1%
Conversion rate~4.2%~0.6%
Mind the open-rate signal Apple Mail Privacy Protection auto-opens messages, so email open rates now overstate real attention. Judge email advertising on clicks, conversion and revenue per send, not opens — the same metrics that make its ROI case in the first place.

06 Advertising inside email: the newsletter boom

The other "email advertising" — and it's growing faster than the inbox itself.

Buying a sponsored slot in someone else's newsletter has become a serious media channel. Global revenue from advertising placed in newsletters and emails is around $2.4 billion4, and the growth is steep: Paved's 2026 data shows newsletter ad revenue up ~30% year over year, campaign volume up ~40%, and reachable subscriber bases up ~80%, with 64% of marketers now using the channel and rebooking intent up 53%5.

+53%

Why it's rising: as tracking cookies fade and paid-social costs climb, newsletters offer first-party, opted-in audiences and brand-safe, uncluttered placements — an ad that arrives as content, not an interruption.

07 What in-email ad space costs

CPMs that put display advertising to shame — for the right list.

Newsletter sponsorships are priced on CPM (cost per thousand subscribers), and they run high because the audience is opted-in and targeted. The cross-industry median sits around $32 CPM, but the spread is enormous: general consumer lists go for $3–30, while specialized B2B newsletters command $95+ CPM — and the priciest niches (HR, finance) can run 15× a lifestyle list5.

Cross-industry median~$32Directional
General consumer lists$3–30Directional
Specialized B2B lists$95+Directional
Top niches (HR, finance)up to ~15× a lifestyle listLow-conf
The takeaway on pricing In-email ad pricing rewards relevance over raw size: a 10,000-subscriber B2B list at $95 CPM out-earns a 100,000-subscriber lifestyle list at $5. If you're buying, chase fit; if you're selling, a tight niche beats a big generic list.

08 The email-advertising playbook

Five moves the numbers support, ranked.

#MoveWhy — from the data
1Use email to convert, paid media to acquireEmail ROI ~$36 & CPA $1–3 win on efficiency1; paid buys the new reach email can't.
2Measure email ads on clicks & revenue, not opensMPP inflates opens; conversion (~4.2%) and revenue per send are the honest signals2.
3Test sponsored newsletters for acquisitionA $2.4B channel up ~30% YoY5; first-party, brand-safe reach as cookies fade.
4Buy niche lists, not big onesB2B lists at $95+ CPM out-convert cheap general lists5; relevance beats size.
5Turn bought reach into an owned listNewsletter placements grow the list you then advertise to at ~$1–3 CPA — the flywheel.

▦ Sources & methodology

Methodology. Cross-channel ad economics are hard to compare cleanly — email, paid search, social and display measure different actions at different funnel stages, and ROI/CPA figures are largely self-reported. So numbers here are tagged Directional, and the paid-channel ROI and CPA figures — which vary wildly by source (paid search alone is quoted from $2 to $8 per $1) — are Low-conf.
