Welcome email open rates, 2026

The welcome email is the single highest-performing message most brands ever send — and the most misquoted. Reported open rates run anywhere from 35% to 84% depending on who's counting. This report untangles the range, sets it against clicks, conversion and revenue, and puts a confidence tag on every number so you know what's a benchmark and what's folklore.

01 Executive summary

Welcome emails are the best-performing message in email marketing — and the most inconsistently reported. The headline "83% open rate" is real, but it's the top of a range that starts near 35%. The honest picture: a welcome email typically opens at roughly 2× a regular campaign, clicks at ~4×, and earns more revenue per send than any other automated flow12.

The one-line takeaway Don't chase the 83% headline — chase the mechanism behind it. A welcome email wins because it arrives at the one moment a subscriber is most engaged and most expecting to hear from you. Send it immediately, make the first screen count, and measure it on clicks and revenue — not the open rate, which for welcome emails is the most distorted metric you have (see §07).

The welcome email is one automated flow inside a bigger picture — here's the rest of it.

02 How high open rates really go

Every source is "right" — they're just counting different things.

Search "welcome email open rate" and you'll get numbers from 35% to 84%. All are defensible; the spread comes down to sample composition, single vs. series, and how each provider defines a "welcome." The cleanest way to read a welcome open rate is against the same provider's other email types, in one dataset. GetResponse's benchmark does exactly that:

Email type (one dataset)Open rateClick rate
Welcome83.63%16.60%
Autoresponder (welcome series)51.05%5.59%
Triggered45.38%5.02%
Newsletter / broadcast40.08%3.84%

Single source: GetResponse Email Marketing Benchmarks1. Welcome ≈ 2× the newsletter open rate and ≈ 4× its click rate — the multiple, not the absolute number, is what travels across datasets.

Why the number moves so much

How to quote it honestly Say "welcome emails open at roughly 2× a regular campaign, and the best single welcome emails exceed 80%." That's true in every dataset. A flat "welcome emails get an 83% open rate" is the top of the range presented as the average.

03 Why welcome emails outperform

Right message, right person, exactly the right moment.

A welcome email lands in the narrow window when intent is at its peak: the subscriber just chose to hear from you, your brand is top of mind, and they're often still on the confirmation screen. That's why the classic figures are so lopsided — welcome emails are widely cited at 4× the open rate and 5× the click rate of a standard campaign5, and 74% of subscribers expect one immediately4.

Treat the exact multiples as directional — they're older, single-source, and hard to trace to raw data. The direction, though, is confirmed by every current benchmark in §02: triggered and autoresponder emails beat broadcasts on both opens and clicks because they're relevant and immediate1.

The first impression is measurable This is also the moment of highest risk: campaign data shows a large share of brands either send no welcome or send it late, forfeiting the peak-intent window. Getting the first email right is a rare marketing lever that costs one automation to build and pays back on every new subscriber. Stripo's 20 best welcome email examples break down what the top performers put on that first screen.

04 Beyond opens: clicks, conversion, revenue

The open rate is the vanity metric here; the money is downstream.

Because opens are the most distorted welcome-email metric, the numbers that matter are clicks, conversion, and revenue per email — and welcome emails top all three. Omnisend clocks welcome emails at $6.16 in revenue per email, the highest of any automated flow, with a conversion rate near 3%2. Together with cart and browse-abandonment, welcome emails drive 87% of all automated ecommerce orders — and about 1 in 2 people who click one go on to buy2.

What to put on the dashboard Report welcome performance on click-to-open rate, conversion, and revenue per recipient. These survive Apple's auto-opens, and they're the numbers a welcome email is actually there to move.

05 Timing & the welcome series

The half-life of a subscription is short. Speed is a strategy.

Welcome performance decays with every hour of delay. The subscriber's intent peaks at signup and fades fast, which is why the instantly-triggered first email opens far higher than the same content sent in a next-day batch. Yet campaign data repeatedly finds a large share of brands wait too long — or never send at all — leaving the highest-intent moment on the table7.

A welcome series beats a single welcome on total revenue — by one Mailchimp analysis, a series earns about 51% more revenue than a single welcome email — but not on per-email opens: each subsequent message opens lower, which is exactly why "welcome flow" averages (~50%) sit below the single-welcome headline (80%+). GetResponse notes short cycles of 1–3 messages hold the highest open and click rates1.

ChoiceEffect on opensEffect on revenue
Send immediately (real-time trigger)Highest — peak intentHighest per email
Delay hours / batch overnightLower — intent decaysLower
Single welcomeHighest per-email openGood, but leaves revenue unclaimed
Short series (1–3 emails)Strong across the seriesBest total — sweet spot
Long series (5+ emails)Tapers on later sendsDiminishing returns
Directional, not laboratory-precise The timing effects above are consistent across benchmark commentary and campaign case studies, but exact lift figures for "immediate vs. delayed" vary by source and rarely come from controlled tests. Treat the ranking as reliable and the magnitudes as directional.

06 What lifts welcome opens

The subject line and the personalization do most of the work.

Two levers move welcome open rates more than any other: the subject line and personalization. Personalized emails are reported to lift opens by around 29% and click-throughs by around 41%7 — and a welcome email is the easiest place to personalize, because you just captured the subscriber's context.

The subject line is where opens are won or lost. A welcome subject that names the value the subscriber just opted into — the discount, the first lesson, the download — outperforms a generic "Welcome!". Stripo's free AI subject-line generator spins up six tone-adjustable options built on Cialdini's persuasion principles, and its AI email tools personalize the body from the data you captured at signup.

07 The open-rate reliability caveat

Welcome emails are the most open-rate-distorted message you send.

Here's the uncomfortable part of every welcome open-rate stat: Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-loads images — registering an "open" — whether or not a human ever looks. Any triggered email is affected, but the welcome email is hit hardest, because it fires the instant someone subscribes, exactly when Apple's proxy is most likely to pre-fetch it. Reported industry open rates now run into the mid-40s% for regular mail and much higher for welcomes, but they no longer reliably mean a person opened the message6.

Mind the open-rate signal A rising welcome open rate can be pure Apple pre-fetch. Judge welcome emails on click-to-open rate, conversion, and revenue per recipient — signals privacy proxies don't inflate. Optimizing subject lines against a corrupted open-rate target teaches you the wrong lesson.

There's a design implication as well: mailbox AI increasingly summarizes messages before a human reads them, so a welcome email built as one clean, single-column layout with real text (not text baked into images) and complete alt text is parsed — and represented — more accurately than a dense, image-only design.

08 The welcome-email playbook

Five moves the benchmarks support, ranked by evidence.

#MoveWhy — from the data
1Send it immediately, on a real-time triggerIntent peaks at signup; the instant welcome opens highest and earns most per email1.
2Run a short series (1–3), not a single sendSeries wins on total revenue; short cycles hold the highest opens and clicks1.
3Personalize the subject and first screenPersonalization lifts opens ~29% and clicks ~41%; welcome is the easiest place to do it7.
4Measure on clicks & revenue, not opensWelcome open rates are the most MPP-inflated metric you have6; $6.16/email is the real scoreboard2.
5Design it to be machine-readableSingle-column, real text, full alt text — parsed accurately by mailbox AI and every client6.

Sources & methodology

Methodology. Email benchmarks are inherently sample-dependent — a welcome open rate reflects the provider's customer base, how it defines "welcome," and Apple Mail Privacy inflation. So most figures here are tagged Directional: credible, large-sample vendor benchmarks that are nonetheless self-reported and sample-specific. The classic "4× open rate / 74% expect a welcome" figures are marked Low-conf — widely repeated, older, and hard to trace to raw data. Rather than pick one number, this report shows the range and reads welcome performance against other email types in the same dataset. Stripo platform figures are canonical as of 2026.
